Book Review Angelfall By Susan Ee

This is really a fun book that pulls you through the plot. It is a cool combination of dystopian literature, sci-fi, and religion. Essentially angels take over the earth, are real jerks, and our dear protagonist has to team up with one. This really has a new feel to it, a really fun read, and shockingly inexpensive (you can buy the whole trilogy for around $25). Click here to buy the book.

What I loved: There isn’t down time. Ee does a fantastic job at weaving exposition, flashbacks, and intense action. The success and failures that the protagonist experiences actually make sense, which is a dangerous thing to say. One of my biggest issues with stories in any format is when a character has huge, impossible roadblocks, and all hope is lost, and there is some sneaky little loophole that saves the day. THIS BOOK DOES NOT DO THAT! Plenty of humor. Lots of action. This book balances between a male and female audience.

What I Wanted: Answers. This reads kind of like the Maze Runner series where you are constantly wanting to know just a little more. The mystery is fantastic and you do end the first novel on a satisfying note, it’s just... I get frustrated when I don’t know answers and I have to not read for a few days. So that is me being selfish. 

This is a great option for if you are looking to mix up a really popular genre. I highly recommend this, less than ten dollars and it's available on Amazon Prime (as are the other two in the series), so it is a good deal. Book Recommendation: The Black Prism (Lightbringer) by Brent Weeks

This is something I will be doing occasionally as a way to earn some money, which is recommend stories (in any form of media) that I have found particularly admirable. This is a series that really influenced my ideas for The Shading. first off, the magic systems used in the books are fairly similar. Both are light based, though I will admit that I found this series while looking for a book that used light for magic as a sort of research. As time goes on and you are able to read more into my story (as well as Weeks' story) I hope you can see the similarities and differences.

What I loved: Weeks has a clear understanding of what it takes to lead countries and armies. he is able to describe in-depth responsibilities while capturing your attention. It is such a brilliant balance of detail and keeping the story flowing. He establishes complex governments, complex disagreements, and complex magic systems and explains them in ways that are straight forward to understand. There is a fantastic build to his story, so much so that I am surprised at how invested I find myself. His characters are well developed and strong, so much so that I could see many of them being the stars of their own story.

What I Wanted More: Weeks seems undecided if he wants this to read more as an epic fantasy or a YA novel. And that would be my only "complaint", yet I find myself immersed in his writing and loving it, plus his success makes me thing maybe he is onto something and the amateur writer you are currently reading needs to learn from the professionals.

Introduction

I have a degree in writing, and have done very little with it. To be brief, my goal here is to judge and create the market for my style of writing. I have been working on a few stories and would like to publish chapters from them here (think comic book issues, only no pictures, rough drafts, and no guarantee that this will be the medium that the entire story will be published on). My most ambitious goal would be to publish one chapter a week from three different stories, so you would get sequential chapters every three weeks. If I am feeling especially creative I could include short stories, or things of that nature.

Hopefully this can turn into a anyone of a few potentially successful avenues. Maybe I could finish entire stories here, and use fan feedback to help guide certain aspects (I don't really see using a fan vote to make decisions). I could start writing here as a bit of a testing ground, then create a complete print/electronic version. Or (this is my least favorite) I am kindly notified by the people closest to me that my writing is weak and I need to keep my day job. No matter what happens I am just a simple man trying to become rich and famous.

My first post will come later this week, for which I am pretty nervous. I haven't shared much of this side of me, and well this could be a huge belly flop.
